Kakuryu faces test against Hakuho

Kakuryu set up a final-day showdown against yokozuna Hakuho for the biggest prize of his career after a walloping of fallen ozeki Kisenosato on the 14th day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Saturday.

But Kakuryu, who controlled the bout from start to finish before swatting down Kisenosato to improve to 13-1, must now beat the undefeated yokozuna twice for all the marbles; once in regulation, and again in a playoff.
Hakuho (14-0), who is seeking his 28th career title, once again proved invincible as he gave ozeki Kotoshogiku a master clinic in the art of technical prowess.
After a short standstill, the yokozuna deployed a rarely seen uchimuso in which he used his left hand to sweep Kotoshogiku’s (8-6) knee, while twisting his opponent to the dohyo surface.
Kakuryu will have his work cut out against Hakuho, who has a 30-2 edge in career bouts against the ozeki.
Kisenosato, who was tasked with winning the tournament with at least 13 wins for a shot at promotion to yokozuna, was dumped to his third straight defeat and must win his match against Kotoshogiku on Sunday to finish with a winning record.
But another win will likely be a tough order for the struggling ozeki, who is suffering from an injury to his right big toe.
No. 10 maegashira Endo put another notch in his mawashi with a vicious expulsion of Satoyama (7-7) for his 11th win, adding to his ever-growing popularity in his third run in the elite division.
Sekiwake Goeido (7-7) put himself on the bubble for his kachi-koshi with his second straight win, grinding out Kyokutenho (6-8) in a textbook frontal force out
A day after seeing his bid for a return to ozeki go up in smoke, Kotooshu bounced back to twist down Tamawashi (8-6) with an overarm throw to get his eighth win. The Bulgarian sekiwake entered the tournament needing 10 wins to regain his rank after he was demoted following the Kyushu Basho in November.
In another early bout, Egyptian-born Osunaarashi and Kitataiki incurred the ire of the gyoji and ringside judges after committing three false starts.
Osunaarashi, who is appearing for the second time in the top class, sent Kitataiki (7-7) packing with an okuridashi rear shove out for his ninth win once the bout finally got off the ground.
Yoshikaze saw his winning streak snapped at seven bouts when he was knocked over the edge by tsukiotoshi from Tochiozan, leaving both men at 10-4.

Murakami surging toward Sochi with style, confidence

Commanding attention: Kanako Murakami earned the third-most points in the free skate this season, trailing only Mao Asada and Julia Lipnitskaia. | AP

When you work in this business, there is nothing more rewarding than watching an athlete truly come into their own.

When the point of critical mass is reached, the individual begins to fully realize their full potential with strong performances and their confidence soars, making them able to achieve greatness.
This is what we are witnessing now with Kanako Murakami
It started at the Japan nationals last month in Saitama, where in a high-pressure situation she was absolutely sublime in finishing second behind Akiko Suzuki and ahead of Mao Asada, and continued last weekend when she won the title at the Four Continents Championships in Taipei.
Murakami has always had the ability, but with her belief in herself booming, she has the chance to do something special at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
It’s not just my eye the Nagoya native is catching, but others who follow the sport closely as well.
American skating journalist Peter Murray, who has run the popular websiteblazingblades.com for several years, was so moved by Murakami’s effort at the Four Continents that he posted the following along with a link to video of her free skate:
“With this performance I believe that Kanako Murakami cemented her claim as successor to Mao Asada as the premier skating star among the Japanese ladies of the ice.
“Her interpretation of the movie ‘Yentl’ song ‘Papa, Can You Hear Me?’ was a seamless telling of the story of Yentl speaking to her late father in heaven of her undying love for him.
“Kanako produced one of those rare moments in skating where music, art and athleticism merge as one magical moment in time that thrills one’s soul. It is a rare moment like this that elevates the sport of figure skating to a level other athletic events cannot match.”
Murray’s observations clearly reflect the vibe going around the skating community now that the 19-year-old Murakami has a powerful combination going for her with a short program and free skate that are set to emotive music and also well-choreographed.
Murakami, the 2010 world junior champion, was athletic and graceful in victory at the Four Continents, clearly capturing the imagination of both the judges and audience.
She hit seven triple jumps in her free skate and received level fours on her spins and step sequence.
Only Mao and Russia’s Julia Lipnitskaia have notched higher scores in the free skate this season than Murakami’s 132.18. Her total of 196.91 was more than 10 points better than compatriot Satoko Miyahara, who finished second.
What is even more amazing about Murakami’s showing in Taiwan is that she did it wearing a new pair of boots that have been causing her ankle pain. She changed skates after the nationals, and has had a tough time breaking them in.
Murakami understood the gravity of her victory over the weekend, with it coming so close to the Sochi Games, especially because at one point she was considering withdrawing from the event.
“This is an important competition and winning here means the next step for me,” she said. “I was able to do the best performance that I can at the moment.”
With all that we know now, it makes you wonder what she can achieve with boots that fit and ankles that aren’t sore. Murakami’s ascension promises to make the women’s singles in Sochi that much more compelling.
In a 2010 interview with Ice Time, Murakami credited Mao’s effort at the 2010 Vancouver Games with inspiring her to shoot for the stars.
“Before I watched this year’s Olympics, I had no intention to compete in the Olympics, because my dream is to be a figure skating coach in the future,” she said at the time. “But by watching her (Mao’s) performance in Vancouver, I was so impressed and moved. Then I felt that I wanted to compete on such a big stage in the future and impress many people.”
Now she has her chance.
Bright future: Though she finished a distant second at the Four Continents, Ice Time sees the potential for greatness in the 15-year-old Miyahara.
She was impressive in taking fourth at the nationals, which followed a Grand Prix season with a pair of fifth-place showings (at the NHK Trophy and Cup of Russia) in her first senior campaign.
Miyahara, who hails from Kyoto, displays outstanding skills at this juncture of her career and a poise that is far beyond her years. She exudes an elegance on the ice with her presentation that suggests she can be a very special skater.
She hit seven triple jumps in Taipei on the way to making the podium, and is already looking ahead.
“This event was the most nerve-wracking for me,” she stated. “I know this will be a great start for the next season. Today’s performance made me gain confidence. I didn’t care about my placement. Being second doesn’t really matter to me; the most important thing was to do the best I could.”
It is going to be enjoyable for skating fans to watch Miyahara blossom in the coming years. The feeling here is she will be a factor when the Pyeongchang Games roll around in 2018.
Comprehensive coverage: Ice Time will be on site at the Olympic Games to report on all of the latest developments as Mao and Yuzuru Hanyu make their bids for the glory.
When you consider the different competitors and varying story lines of those slated to take part in Russia, it promises to be a truly spectacular show.
Can Mao upset Kim Yu-na and win the gold medal?
Will Hanyu best three-time world champion Patrick Chan like he did at the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka?
Does Daisuke Takahashi have a shot at a second Olympic medal?
Is national champion Akiko Suzuki going to steal the show?
Could Japan medal in the team competition?
It won’t be long until we find out the answers to all of the above.

Collapsed Road Causes Long Line of Cars from Jakarta

Collapsed Road Causes Long Line of Cars from Jakarta

SATURDAY, 25 JANUARY, 2014 | 16:58 WIB
TEMPO.COJakarta - Vehicles from Jakarta are forced to queue for approximately 6 kilometers long of line, starting from Km 66, for going toward Cikopo Toll road, and the contra-flow lane at Km 70-71 of Cipularang Toll, Saturday afternoon, January 25. The queue that has started since this morning was caused by the collapse of Cipularang Toll road at Km 72 and the Pantura lane.

"At the start, the destination from Jakarta to Bandung can fit three lanes from lane B, but starting from Km 70-71 the vehicles have to queue to enter one contraflow lane on line A (to Jakarta). The contra-flow lane that is around 2 kilometers long, is moving slowly," said Purwakarta Police Resort chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Slamet Hariyadi, Saturday, January 25.
The CCTV at the central communication PT Jasamarga Purbaleunyi branch showed a number of officers appeared to be still repairing the damaged road at around Km 72. Traffic cones have been placed several hundred meters away from the location.
He said the police have at least conducted three strategies following the collapse. First, he said, was to collaborate with PT Jasamarga so the collapsed road would be repaired immediately. "It has been agreed that it will be repaired within three days at maximum. So the lane at around Km 72 would return to normal, tomorrow. I'm not sure at what time, but it should be completed by tomorrow," he said.

Chatib Basri: Flood Affects Inflation Rate
FRIDAY, 17 JANUARY, 2014 | 19:06 WIB
TEMPO.COJakarta - Finance Minister Muhammad Chatib Basri, stated that the increasing precipitation and flood in several areas in Indonesia will affect inflation rate. He explained that it is mostly because of the disrupted goods and services distribution.

"We will see it on January 20 in the monthly financial report," said Minister Chatib.
Deputy Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro stated that weather and flood pose only insignificant effect to inflation. However, he added that the government must continue to be aware because both issues can disrupt food distribution.
Economy Expert from Gadjah Mada University Tony Prasetiantono, stated that inflation was also caused by harvest failure due to flood.
"This contributes to inflation. Yet, the coming months show that such factor will weaken. Therefore inflation rate will drop," he said. "Historically, inflation in January ranges around 0.5 to 1 percent, higher than any other months."

Anas: No Plans for Pre-Trial Yet
TEMPO.COJakarta - Anas Urbaningrum’s legal counsel, Firman Wijaya, said that he had not taken any measures to plead for pre-trial of Anas’ case.

“There is no plan yet. [I’m] just bringing clothes and food to the detention center,” said Firman toTempo on Monday, January 13, 2014.
Last Friday, during a press conference at his residence, Anas Urbaningrum questioned the letter of investigation order (sprindik) issued by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Anas Urbaningrum was arrested by KPK on Friday, January 10, 2014, after missing two KPK’s summons. LPG Price Hike Causes Small Food Industry's Production to Plunge

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Food and Beverage Association (Gapmmi) Secretary-General, Franky Sibarani, said the price of 12-kg liquid petroleum gas (LPG) increased 68 percent or Rp122,000 per tank, which further weakened the conditions of small to medium food industries to continue competing. As a result, his party promised he would coordinate with people from food and beverage industries in the near future to discuss about the possibility of increasing selling prices.
He advised that for small and medium industries to decrease their production capacity and delay their plans to expand their production. He also explained that from the total food and beverage industry, 99.5 percent consisted of small and medium industries. "Medium-large industry is only 0.5 percent, so 99.5 percent is small-medium households," he said.
PT Pertamina had previously made the decision to increase 12-kg LPGs. The state-owned company’s spokesman, Ali Mundakir, said from January 1, the price of non-subsidized gas increased to approximately Rp3,959 per kilogram, or Rp122,000 per tank, which was previously Rp78,000.
