Jokowi Coalition Announcement Hoists JCI

Jokowi Coalition Announcement Hoists JCI

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The domestic stock market experienced a significant increase following the official declaration of the coalition of political parties supporting Joko Widodo's candidacy in the upcoming presidential election. The declaration encouraged investors to buy shares, pushing the Jakarta Composite Index up by 70 points (1.4 percent) to 4,991.
Bank Mandiri's chief economist Destry Damayanti said the gain was mainly the result of political sentiments rather than economic data. "PDIP, NasDem, and PKB's declaration to nominate Joko Widodo provided a political certainty. The market is finally moving after being suspended by political uncertainties for the last few days," Destry said yesterday.
The strengthening of the index and the rupiah, Destry said, will not last long. The rapidly changing political situations will affect the market. In addition, the index is predicted to weaken once it reaches a high enough position.
A similar view was expressed by OSO Securities' analyst Mohammad Alfi Syahrin. Alfi said that investors like Jokowi as a political figure, so any support for theJakartagovernor will be responded positively by the market. "Foreign investors will not hesitate to re-enter the trading floor," he said.
Regarding the current political constellation, deputy chair of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Natsir Mansour said the market responded positively to Jokowi's nomination. This, he said, is based on PDI-P's economic platform which is considered pro-business. "PDI-P will boost growth and push for equity," he said.
The index is predicted to stay on an uptrend range of 4,967 to 5,055. Alfi said the JCI might also benefit from listed companies' dividend payouts scheduled to take place this month. He also said that the market uptrend is also caused by several issuers' technical increases, suggesting investors to keep their eyes on PGAS, BBNI, and BSDE.

Chairul Tanjung Replaces Hatta Rajasa as Economic Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has officially appointed Chairul Tanjung to replace Hatta Rajasa as the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.
"I appointed Mr. Chairul Tanjung to become the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. He has the skill, the ability and the commitment to encourage the country's development. Chairul was appointed following Hatta Rajasa's resignation from the position to become Prabowo Subianto's running mate for the presidential election on July 9, 2014.
According to SBY, Chairul has contributed in solving economic issues and also participates in formulating the Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development (MP3EI). Fadel: Coalition with PDI-P More Feasible

Fadel: Coalition with PDI-P More Feasible

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Deputy chairman of the Golkar Party Fadel Muhammad confirmed there was a meeting recently between Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie and Prabowo Subianto, the chief patron of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, at Tower Bakrie in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.
“Yes, there was a meeting there,” Fadel told Tempo on Thursday, May 15, 2014.
Fadel, however, was tight-lipped on the results of the meeting. Earlier, it was reported that Prabowo and Ical—Aburizal’s popular name—had alternately paid each other a visit at their private residences in what was seen as possible coalition talks. Both parties, however, had seemed to have drifted apart lately.
“I think cooperation with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is more feasible,” Fadel said.
“If the  PDI-P and the Golkar Party have a coalition, the governance will be strong,” he said while showing the number of regional chiefs hailing from both parties.

Hatta Rajasa is Not Prabowo's Official VP Yet: Gerindra

Hatta Rajasa is Not Prabowo's Official VP Yet: Gerindra

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party said it has not officially named National Mandate Party (PAN) chairman Hatta Rajasa an the vice presidential candidate for Prabowo, Gerindra's chief patron.
Gerindra chairman Suhardi said that PAN's national work meeting yesterday only decided that the party would Prabowo's nomination. Suhardi asserted the meeting made no official statement about Hatta running as Prabowo's first mate.
"PAN only suggested that Pak Hatta becomes the vice president candidate to Pak Prabowo," Suhardi told Tempo, Thursday, May 15. According to Suhardi, the decision to choose a vice presidential candidate depends on what Prabowo decides and what agreement is made between Gerindra and the parties it is in coalition with.
"There must be a mutual agreement," Suhardi said.
He also said that Prosperous Justice Party (PKS)—touted to be Gerindra's coalition partner—had also proposed some names to run with Prabowo in the July 9 presidential election.
PKS proposed three names, Suhardi said, chairman of the PKS faction at the House Hidayat Nur Wahid, its president Anis Matta and its Shura Council member Ahmad Heryawan.
Meanwhile, Suhardi said that the United Development Party (PPP) did not propose anyone as Prabowo's VP. "PPP declared it will coalesce [with Gerindra] unconditionally, and leave the decision [over who will run for vice president] to Pak Prabowo," he said.
Suhardi remained tight lipped about its vice president candidate, only stating that it would be announced before May 20.

41% of voters still undecided on candidates

Source: LSI: (JP/SWI)
A public opinion poll conducted by the Jakarta-based Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) has found that the majority of respondents were undecided about who to vote for in the July 9 presidential election.

The LSI survey, conducted between May 1 and 9 in 33 provinces, found that around 41 percent of the 2,400 respondents would not commit to a decision, whether the presidential election be a two- or three-horse race.

The results, which were published Tuesday, were much higher than that of the 2009 election, when less than 20 percent of voters had no discernible preference.

According to the survey, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would either be paired with Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Abraham Samad or former vice president Jusuf Kalla, while Gerindra Party chief patron Prabowo Subianto was paired with National Awakening Party (PAN) chairman Hatta Rajasa.

With Jokowi-Kalla and Prabowo-Hatta, 35.91 percent of respondents chose the former if the presidential election was held in May, while 41.76 percent remained undecided.

In a scenario where Jokowi was paired with Samad, Jokowi’s ratings increased slightly; garnering 36.05 percent. Even so, the number of swing voters remained high at 41.69 percent.

A third pairing was proposed by the LSI, with Golkar Party’s Sultan Hamengkubuwono X touted as a presidential candidate alongside former trade minister Gita Wirjawan, who is speculated to win the Democratic Party convention, thus, poised for the vice presidential ticket.

LSI researchers took into account the possibility that Golkar and the Democratic Party could jointly form their own axis.

In a three-way contest, Jokowi-Samad would receive 26.21 percent of the vote, followed by Prabowo-Hatta (17.76 percent) and Hamengkubuwono-Gita (14.82 percent).

When Jokowi was paired with Kalla, their electability decreased slightly to 25.32 percent, while Prabowo-Hatta gained 18.14 percent and Hamengkubuwono-Gita 16.02 percent.

“Samad is more preferable to Kalla as he is seen to have a clean track record,” LSI researcher Dewi Arum said.

Dewi said the pairing options offered in the questionnaire were based on media reports.

Despite all the scenarios suggesting a high preference for Jokowi, the swing voters would be the deal breakers.

LSI researcher Adjie Alfaraby said that the large number of floating voters meant that the hopefuls would have an equal chance in their race for the presidency.

Adjie argued that the reason for such a high number of floating voters had a lot to do with negative campaigns on the electability of each candidate.

He also attributed the spike in the swing voters to the growing public distrust in parties, with only 32.8 percent of respondents still placing faith in them.

The survey broke down the number of swing voters according to gender, age, environment, faith and ethnic group.

In regards to religious background, around 49.8 percent of Muslim respondents had no clue as to their preference, citing a lack of choices representing Islamic values.

The survey revealed that 47.6 percent of swing voters were women, while 52.3 percent lived outside the cities.

It also pointed out that floating voters spread across all age groups. Only respondents aged over 50 had made definite candidate choice decisions.

As many as 71.5 percent of respondents demanded presidential candidates inform the public of their programs.

Around 58.53 percent of respondents said they believed that programs related to the protection of values on diversity should be a top priority for candidates, while as many as 73.51 percent demanded corruption eradication progress.

On the economic front, 63.24 percent of respondents thought that improving conditions relevant to a conducive environment for business was important.

According to the General Elections Commission (KPU), a total of 124.9 million valid votes were cast in the April 9 legislative election, from 185 million eligible voters nationwide.

What is debate?

Debate is contention in argument; dispute, controversy; discussion; especially the discussion of questions of public interest in Parliament or in any assembly.
Debate is a method of interactive and representational argument. Debate is a broader form of argument than deductive reasoning, which only examines whether a conclusion is a consequence of premises, and factual argument, which only examines what is or isn't the case, or rhetoric, which is a technique of persuasion. Though logical consistency, factual accuracy and some degree of emotional appeal to the audience are important elements of the art of persuasion, in debating, one side often prevails over the other side by presenting a superior "context" and/or framework of the issue, which is far more subtle and strategic. The outcome of a debate depends upon consensus or some formal way of reaching a resolution, rather than the objective facts as such. In a formal debating contest, there are rules for participants to discuss and decide on differences, within a framework defining how they will interact.
Debating is commonly carried out in many assemblies of various types to discuss matters and to make resolutions about action to be taken, often by a vote. Deliberative bodies such as parliaments, legislative assemblies, and meetings of all sorts engage in debates. In particular, in parliamentary democracies a legislature debates and decides on new laws. Formal debates between candidates for elected office, such as the leaders debates and the U.S. presidential election debates, are sometimes held in democracies. Debating is also carried out for educational and recreational purposes, usually associated with educational establishments. The major goal of the study of debate as a method or art is to develop the ability to debate rationally from either position with equal ease.
Although informal debate is common the quality and depth of a debate improves with knowledge and skill of its participants as debaters. The outcome of a contest may be decided by audience vote, by judges, or by some combination of the two.

Criminologist: Sex Abuse Victims' Reports Help Reveal Cases

Criminologist: Sex Abuse Victims' Reports Help Reveal Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mass media is abuzz with reports on a number of sexual abuse on children, starting from violence on a kindergarten student at Jakarta International School (JIS) to dozens of underage children who had been sexually abused by Andri (Emon) Sobari in Sukabumi, West Java.
University of Indonesia criminologist Muhammad Irvan Olii said the truth is that this kind of case has often happened since years ago. However, this has become a commotion because victims had courageously reported them. "Victims have realized that it is a crime, then they bravely report them," he told Tempo, Friday, May 9.
Moreover, he said, mass media has also helped to report it widely; as a result, sexual abuse cases have emerged to the surface. "This is not a matter of large or small numbers of cases, but victims' awareness to report," he explained.
According to Irvan, sexual abuse often happens in the cities, however, it does not meant it does not occur in villages. "It could happen in villages, but they have not been revealed yet because victims have not reported," he said.

What is the meaning of Philosophy

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. In more casual speech, by extension, "philosophy" can refer to "the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group".
