Criminologist: Sex Abuse Victims' Reports Help Reveal Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mass media is abuzz with reports on a number of sexual abuse on children, starting from violence on a kindergarten student at Jakarta International School (JIS) to dozens of underage children who had been sexually abused by Andri (Emon) Sobari in Sukabumi, West Java.
University of Indonesia criminologist Muhammad Irvan Olii said the truth is that this kind of case has often happened since years ago. However, this has become a commotion because victims had courageously reported them. "Victims have realized that it is a crime, then they bravely report them," he told Tempo, Friday, May 9.
Moreover, he said, mass media has also helped to report it widely; as a result, sexual abuse cases have emerged to the surface. "This is not a matter of large or small numbers of cases, but victims' awareness to report," he explained.
According to Irvan, sexual abuse often happens in the cities, however, it does not meant it does not occur in villages. "It could happen in villages, but they have not been revealed yet because victims have not reported," he said.
