Probolinggo Deadly Crash Claims 18 Lives
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Public Relations of East Java Police, Comr. Sr. Awi Setiyono, said that the deadly accident that took place at Jl. Tongas in Curah Tulis Village, Tongas sub-district, Probolinggo, East Java yesterday had claimed 18 lives, including the driver of the pick-up van.
"As of now, 18 people have died in the accident," said Awi through a text message to Tempoyesterday. All of the victims were taken to Tongas hospital.
As previously reported, the accident came about when a pick-up van from Probolinggo headed to Surabaya collided with a truck moving in the opposite direction. The driver of the minivan was overtaking a bus and was, therefore, on the counterflow lane.
As the driver was overtaking the bus, a truck hit the minivan head-on. According to Avi, Police were still investigating the case. A special team from the East Java police has been deployed to carry out the investigation.
